The Catalan Data Protection Authority (APDCAT) has released new informative material to urge citizens not to let their guard down and protect the security of mobile devices, which in recent years have become another tool for accessing personal information, such as bank details, email, images, videos, etc.
Thus, he has published a new video as part of the #SafeData campaign, with more than a dozen actions to take into account to maintain the security of these devices, which also present vulnerabilities like computers and can be a gateway for cyber attacks, in the form of phishing, smishing and the installation of malware or spyware.
The APDCAT publishes these recommendations to coincide with the time when the summer holidays are mostly concentrated, and when the level of public alertness may decrease while the personal information (videos, images, etc.) that is shared may increase.
Among the recommended actions, the APDCAT includes:
- Use authentication mechanisms to unlock the device, such as pattern, PIN, etc.
- Use two-factor authentication and strong passwords.
- Use encrypted folders to protect apps and private data, and encrypt internal and external memory.
- Update the software to the latest version.
- Download apps only from trusted stores and services.
- Check the permissions of downloaded apps, so that they can only access what is strictly necessary.
- Back up data to the trusted cloud.
- Watch out for open Wi-Fi networks, because they are a risk, and turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when they are not needed.
- Install a trusted antivirus and scan your device regularly.
- Be prepared for loss or theft:
- Ask for the IMEI number by dialing *#06#, to identify the device in the complaint.
- Block the phone line immediately.
- Enable remote wipe.
The Catalan Data Protection Authority has published new advice to avoid security risks with mobile phones, especially during the summer holidays, when the alert level can go down while the amount of personal information shared increases.
