The Catalan Data Protection Authority (APDCAT) has participated for the second year in a row in MEMEnginy, an event organized by the School of Engineering at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), aimed at facilitating knowledge exchange and networking, and linking the business and employment world with students from technological backgrounds who want to improve their employability and who represent the professionals of the future.
In this context, the APDCAT has promoted privacy as a profession with a future, highlighting career opportunities related to data protection in a permanent booth where it offered information and guidance to students. In this regard, it emphasized careers linked to data, security, and their protection, such as the Data Protection Officer, who is responsible for preventive and proactive functions under the European General Data Protection Regulation, including overseeing, coordinating, and promoting an organization’s data protection policies. The DPO is also the contact point with supervisory authorities, such as the Catalan Data Protection Authority.
Another promoted career path is that of a cybersecurity and privacy expert — a key role, especially in light of the increasing number of cyberattacks worldwide. Under this umbrella are various professions and roles, such as network security and privacy specialists, information systems security consultants, information systems security auditors, network and systems administrators, forensic analysts, information security management system (ISMS) implementers, electronic administration project consultants, and secure web applications and services developers. Privacy is also a central theme in research, in fields such as PETs (Privacy Enhancing Technologies), which involve cutting-edge techniques to improve privacy and develop privacy solution patterns, or in privacy engineering, which involves designing tools and processes to apply privacy protection measures to personal data.
APDCAT Scholarships 2025
Furthermore, the APDCAT used the event to encourage student participation in the upcoming call for two scholarships awarded by the APDCAT for the 2025–2026 academic year. Legal and technological profiles will be prioritized, with the aim of training students in the Authority’s doctrine, emerging technologies, the societal impact of data protection, and the practical application of data protection in public administrations and companies. The scholarships are aimed at individuals who have graduated in law or computer engineering (or equivalent degrees) within the four years prior to the date of the call's publication, or who will be eligible to graduate by the end of the 2024–2025 academic year, and who meet the required level of proficiency in Catalan. The scholarships will last 10 months, with work carried out at the APDCAT's offices and a total workload of 30 hours per week, Monday through Friday.
New edition of the Privacy Warrior Challenge
Additionally, at this MEMEnginy25, the APDCAT has launched a new edition of the Privacy Warrior Challenge, a competition designed to test knowledge in the field of privacy. This time, the game was specifically tailored to the demographic profile and technological interests of the participants, with questions based on real-life scenarios where privacy protection must be applied. Students were able to test their knowledge in topics such as consent, browser cookies, deletion of health data, data security incidents, data processing of minors, and the exercise of rights by individuals whose data is being processed.
