The Catalan Data Protection Authority (APDCAT) and the School of Public Administration of Catalonia (EAPC) have published a new video from the series "Let's talk about personal data". This time, on video games and privacy, by Xavier Puig, APDCAT information systems auditor.
The new resource, available on the APDCAT website and on the EAPC YouTube channel, deepens the need to be aware that video games are a gateway to our data, when played online.
The video points out that video games can collect all kinds of data related to the use of the video game, audio, geolocation of the players, etc. This is often the data of minors, who are a group especially vulnerable that requires special protection. In addition, it warns that many video game manufacturers and distributors use them to collect this data, not only to improve and customize their product, but sometimes also to extract financial benefits from it. For this reason, the video includes key recommendations to try to reduce this impact on personal data: be aware that the capture of our personal data is often the cost we pay for these digital services, know this cost and choose the option with a lower cost Likewise, the Authority works so that the video game industry perceives data privacy as a competitive opportunity.
Second video chapter
This is the second video chapter of the series of audiovisual resources that APDCAT and EAPC have been promoting since 2022, as part of a joint project to raise awareness and disseminate data protection rights among citizens. And they do it with supports and channels suitable for all audiences and with plain language, to explain the concepts in an understandable way.
Thus, within the series, the video "The value of personal data" is also available, which graphically explains what is considered personal data and why it is necessary to protect it. The videos give a more general overview and introduce basic concepts about data protection.
In addition, the project also includes the publication of a series of podcasts, which offer a more in-depth and specialized analysis of different related aspects. At the moment, five are available: the right of access guaranteed by data protection regulations, the entrustment of data processing, the processing of minors' data, data security breaches and the right of information on data protection. These resources are also available on major podcast platforms (Spotify, Spotify for podcasters [formerly Anchor], Amazon Music, Castbox, Pocket Cast, and Ivoox).
