The Catalan Data Protection Authority (APDCAT) and the School of Public Administration of Catalonia (EAPC) have published new educational material to raise awareness of citizens' rights in relation to the use of artificial intelligence tools. This is the seventh video in the ‘Parlem de dades personals’, series, which aims to make data protection more accessible to the public.
Xavier Urios, Head of the Legal Advisory Office, explains how the emergence of new technologies such as AI is transforming society, as these systems are increasingly integrated into services and processes. He highlights both the advantages and the risks of such technologies. In this regard, he warns about the need to avoid bias and discrimination and emphasizes the importance of assessing which data is used to train algorithms during testing phases.
The applicable regulations aim to ensure that AI systems being developed are trustworthy, human-centric, and considerate of the potential impacts in so-called high-risk systems. However, privacy can be affected by the combination of big data and AI, making profiling more feasible, as well as the possibility of influencing individuals’ decisions unconsciously.
The video also outlines some prohibited techniques, such as behavior-manipulating methods or crime prediction, among others.
