The director of the Catalan Data Protection Authority, Meritxell Borràs, participated in Colombia in the round table 'Risks in the digital world: social networks', within the framework of the annual meeting of the Ibero-American Data Protection Network, which this year focused precisely on the risks in the digital world, artificial intelligence, neurotechnologies and social networks.
In her speech, Borràs highlighted the work of the APDCAT in conveying to children and young people the importance of respecting personal data, especially in a technological context where it is very easy to share information about oneself and others. In this sense, she highlighted the INFLUENX3R project in which the Authority has participated to convey key messages to young people about the creation of digital content that respects privacy.
Specifically, as a result of the collaboration between APDCAT and 3Cat, the audiovisual platforms SX3 and 3Cat premiered the second season of the program last December, with a more talent show format, in which participants had to compete to be the best content creators and overcome various challenges. And privacy has been one of the key aspects to take into account. For example, avoiding showing images or faces of people without consent, pixelating car license plates, etc.
In addition to the guidelines of the jury, which has been advised by experts from APDCAT, the program has also broadcast informative pills in video format with a relaxed tone and in a humorous key, starring content creator Albert Roig, on various topics such as cookies, cyberattacks, the dangers of artificial intelligence, or the digital trail.
During the round table, Borràs pointed out that children and adolescents are the most vulnerable group to social networks, because they are in full development, and recalled that this is why the APDCAT has established the defense of minors in digital environments as a strategic objective. In this regard, the director highlighted that the INFLUENX3R project is a step forward. She argued that it shows how data protection authorities respond to the inexcusable duty of looking for ways to reach young people, and prepare them for the digital society, with innovative formats. The aim was to awaken the critical spirit, give advice and raise awareness among a young audience, in a relaxed and humorous tone, she recalled. In addition, the director highlighted other projects in this line such as ‘Who are you? Data that speaks about you’, which includes activities in libraries specially designed by the Authority to spread the culture of privacy, and which received the Global Privacy Assembly award last year. Also training teachers and schools on data protection.
Within the framework of the annual meeting of the Ibero-American Data Protection Network, the director Meritxell Borràs presented the INFLUENX3R project, developed in collaboration with the 3Cat platform, which has served to spread the culture of privacy among young people in the creation of digital content.
