The Catalan Data Protection Authority (APDCAT) organizes next Wednesday, March 15, the conference "Synthetic data and privacy", to delve into the use of artificial data as a measure of data protection from design and by default. The session is part of the specialized training course for data protection delegates, which APDCAT organizes in collaboration with the School of Public Administration of Catalonia (EAPC), and is open to the general public.
The director of the APDCAT, Meritxell Borràs, will be in charge of welcoming, at 12. Then, around 12:15 p.m., professor at the Rovira i Virgili University, director of CYBERCAT and the UNESCO Chair in Data Privacy, Josep Domingo-Ferrer, will give the talk "Synthetic data and privacy". It will address issues such as the process of generating synthetic data, also called synthesis, and assessing the degree of privacy to ensure that the resulting data is not actual personal data. Then, at 1 p.m., there will be time for debate during the question time. The event will take place in the auditorium of the EAPC (c/ Girona, 20).
The use of synthetic data (artificial data generated from original data) is gaining strength in various areas of today's society. For example, they help test algorithms that need an immense amount of labeled data for training, and where limits on data usage are difficult to set. Therefore, they are configured as a good tool to protect privacy in the field of innovation and research with the use of big data.
