The Catalan Data Protection Authority (APDCAT) commemorates on January 28 the International Data Protection Day by organizing the conference ‘Artificial Intelligence and Fundamental Rights: a look beyond privacy’, in the Parliament of Catalonia.

Add to Google CalendarCoinciding with the commemoration of the International Data Protection Day, on January 28, the Catalan Data Protection Authority (APDCAT) presents the first methodology for the Fundamental Rights Impact Assessment (FRIA) in the use of artificial intelligence applied to specific cases in Europe. It is a guide that wants to be an effective tool to develop reliable and human-centred AI solutions, designed to specify the new obligations established by the AI Act. This is the first initiative based on the concrete implementation of an FRIA methodology applied to specific cases in Europe and provides a tool that helps the concretion of the obligation established in art. 27 of the AI Act. There are currently no guidelines from the competent authorities at European level.
The presentation will take place within the framework of the conference ‘Artificial Intelligence and fundamental rights: a look beyond privacy’, which will be held in the Parliament of Catalonia, and will feature the participation of numerous experts in the field.
At 9.30 am, the first deputy secretary of the Bureau of the Parliament of Catalonia, Glòria Freixa i Vilardell, and the director of the APDCAT, Meritxell Borràs and Solé, will be in charge of welcoming the presentation of the applied methodology, which has been prepared within the framework of the working group of ‘DPD in xarxa’ led by the professor of Civil Law and Law and Technology at the Polytechnic University of Turin, Alessandro Mantelero.
Then, after the coffee break, the head of the APDCAT Legal Advisory Board, Xavier Urios Aparisi, will present the new roles and obligations in the AI Act. Next, a round table will be held in which different use cases on impact assessment in fundamental rights will be presented, moderated by the data protection officer (DPO) and responsible for strategic projects of the APDCAT, Joana Marí Cardona. In addition to Alessandro Mantelero, the DPO of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya - BarcelonaTech (UPC), Cristina Guzmán Álvarez will participate; the head of the CaixaBank, S.A. Privacy Office, Esther Garcia Encinas; the DPO of the University of Barcelona, Ruben Ortiz Uroz; and the head of the Department of Open Government and Coordinator of the Presidency of the City Council of Sant Feliu de Llobregat, M. Ascensión Moro Cordero. The closing will take place at 1.30 p.m., by the president of the Parliament, Josep Rull i Andreu.
