The Catalan Data Protection Authority and the University of Barcelona have signed an agreement to boost knowledge of data protection within the university, promote new postgraduate and research programs, and facilitate the participation of students undertaking internships at the Authority
The director of the Catalan Data Protection Authority (APDCAT), Meritxell Borràs i Solé, and the rector of the University of Barcelona (UB), Joan Guàrdia Olmos, have signed an agreement establishing the framework for collaboration between both organizations, with the aim of creating mechanisms and launching programs that enable the University and its staff to become familiar with personal data protection regulations and to strengthen effective awareness-raising and training in this field.
Under the agreement, the UB will be encouraged to create a postgraduate or university extension course on personal data protection or on new technologies and law. It will also promote the development of doctoral theses, bachelor’s final projects and master’s final projects related to personal data protection and new information and communication technologies, as well as scientific research and technological development in the field of R&D&I programs related to personal data protection legislation.
The agreement also provides for the creation of a working group to study and analyze the impact of current data protection legislation on the subjects taught in areas related to law, computer science and new information and communication technologies.
Training for staff and internships for students
Additionally, informative training sessions on data protection will be organized to improve the knowledge and preparation of UB staff in this area, as well as specific conferences on personal data protection.
The agreement will also facilitate UB students undertaking internships at APDCAT focused on understanding current personal data protection, law and computer science legislation; and on the development and use of new information and communication technologies and related subjects.
