The director of the Catalan Data Protection Authority (APDCAT), Meritxell Borràs i Solé, will meet on Friday 5 September with the Government's Representative to the EU, Ester Borràs Andreu, in Brussels. The meeting aims to promote the use and implementation of the Catalan FRIA model among European entities and organisations, as a reference methodology that guarantees the design of safe and reliable artificial intelligence (AI) systems.
The Catalan FRIA model, which was presented to the Parliament of Catalonia on 28 January, is a pioneering methodology for assessing the impact on fundamental rights in the use of AI. This assessment will be mandatory from August 2026 for all developers who want to carry out high-risk AI projects. The Catalan model includes a guide to identifying possible risks in order to mitigate them, and is developed based on specific real cases. It has been developed within the framework of the 'DPD en xarxa' community, which brings together data protection delegates from Catalonia, with the support of professor and expert Alessandro Mantelero. Since its publication, it has been very well received at forums, congresses and events of international scope, and has been adopted by Catalan institutions. Other data protection authorities, such as the Basque one, also promote the Catalan model in the entities in their field as a reference methodology, and the Croatian Authority has translated it into its language and promotes it within its field.
