The second session in the cycle of conferences on the new General Data Protection Regulation organised by the Catalan Data Protection Authority (APDCAT) and the Barcelona Bar Association (ICAB) has now taken place. The event was moderated by Manel Martínez, president of the ICAB’s ICT section. The session addressed questions related to the principles that must govern the processing of personal data as from May 2018, when compliance with the new rules will become compulsory. Discussion also took place on the regime that will be applicable to the protection of data in international transfers of information.

Add to Google CalendarFirst to speak was Santiago Farré, head of the APDCAT Legal Advice department, who emphasised that the traditional principles governing data processing have not varied substantially. However, he highlighted the introduction of the accountability principle, which adds a proactive vision to the responsibility for all data processing that is carried out. Thus, those responsible for the processing will have to adopt appropriate measures to comply with the General Data Protection Regulation and, moreover, will have to be able to demonstrate that they have done so.
In the following address, Rafael García Gozalo, head of the International Department of the Spanish Data Protection Agency (AEPD), made an in-depth examination of the subject of international transfers. He pointed out that the classic European vision continues, but in a more simplified system which nonetheless maintains a high level of guarantee, as decisions on adjustments will have to be re-visited on a regular basis.
